Your donation helps so much...

For more than five decades, Burnaby Public Library has been significantly improved through generous donations received from thousands of library supporters. Donations large and small ensure that your library will continue to evolve and serve the community in the future. Burnaby Public Library is a registered charity; receipts are issued for all donations and can be used for income tax purposes.

The following information provides an overview of the charitable giving options available at Burnaby Public Library.

Donations to the BPL Endowment Fund

You may choose to give a gift to the Bridget Perrot Trust, the Julia Nelson Trust or the General Purpose Trust within the Burnaby Public Library Endowment Fund. The endowment was established in 1984 and a gift to a trust held within the Burnaby Public Library Endowment Fund is a gift in perpetuity.

Donations to a trust within the fund are invested on behalf of the library by the City of Burnaby, with the principal remaining untouched. The interest generated is used by the Burnaby Public Library Board to fund service enhancements otherwise beyond the means of the library. Interest from the General Purpose Trust is used to begin new collections and purchase new equipment. Interest from the Bridget Perrot Trust [PDF] is used to purchase audiobooks for the library’s Home Library Service and equipment for the print disabled. Interest from the Julia Nelson Trust [PDF] is used to support teen services at BPL.

Gifts may take the form of cash donations, bequests, naming the library as beneficiary of a life insurance policy, or gifts of real property.

Donations of books and other materials

Burnaby Public Library welcomes your donations of books and other materials. Learn how to donate in Chinese [PDF] and Korean [PDF].

The library accepts only items that are in excellent condition and of current interest. We are unable to accept items with loose bindings, marked pages or water damage, or that smell of mildew or mothballs. The library will accept up to two boxes or bags (maximum 20lbs) of donations at one time. Due to space constraints, the Library reserves the right to limit the number of items it can accept from a donor at any given time.

Donations are accepted in person at the information desk of your local Burnaby Public Library branch.

The library reviews donations according to the same selection criteria applied to purchased materials, and reserves the right to accept or discard any materials received as donations. Donations not added to the collection may be sold at library book sale tables. Once received, donated materials are the exclusive property of Burnaby Public Library.

Thank you for considering making a donation of books or other materials to Burnaby Public Library!
