Good communication is essential to any healthy relationship, whether it's between spouses, family members, friends, or co-workers, and mindfulness, the practice of nonjudgmental awareness can help us communicate more effectively and meaningfully with others.  In this workshop, Susan Chapman, a psychotherapist and the author of The Five Keys to Mindful Communication explains how the practice of mindfulness awareness can change the way we speak and listen, as a result enhancing our relationships and helping us reach our goals.

Chapman highlights five key elements of mindful communication—silence, mirroring, encouraging, discerning, and responding—that make it possible for us to listen more deeply to others and to develop greater clarity and confidence about how to respond. Other topics include:

  • Identifying your communication patterns and habits
  • Uncovering the hidden fears that often sabotage communication
  • Staying open in the midst of difficult conversations so that we can repond wisely and skillfully
  • Learning how mindful communication can help us to become more truthful, compassionate and flexible in our relationships

Free but seating is limited. Please register online, by calling 604-299-8955 or in person at the Library.

Monday, October 30

Burnaby Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services and Burnaby Public Library are back at Wesburn Community Centre (4871 Parkwood Avenue). We're bringing library services and activities for young kids directly to your neighbourhood – for free!

Participate in indoor play using the Imagination Playground. The Imagination Playground is made up of large, modular blocks that kids can stack and build, providing a fun way to let your child's creativity shape the play.

Browse, borrow, and return library material at the Pop-Up Library. There'll be plenty of books for all ages, and you'll be able to learn about library services and register for a library card.

Come join in the neighbourhood fun!
