Celebrate Diwali with an evening of Kathakali, one of India's most visually spectacular classical art forms.

Join us for a screening of Decoding Kathakali: Exercises, Gestures & Expressions, a short documentary that deconstructs the rigorous physical training, intricate hand gestures (mudras), and expressive facial storytelling that Kathakali performers use to communicate epic narratives, without uttering a single word. The screening includes a contextual introduction by two local artists, each rooted in a different classical Indian performing tradition than the one on screen.

Presented in partnership with Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver (ICMSV).

Decoding Kathakali is a docuseries produced by the Society for Indian Music & Arts and PSU Nritya, based at Penn State University, in collaboration with First Edition Arts. It was supported by the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver (ICMSV) and the Indian Fine Arts Academy of San Diego.
