Misinformation: Concepts, Fact Checking and Impact

This presentation will highlight how information can be weaponized, with "fake news" often used to discredit opposing views, especially on social media, where sensational false content spreads rapidly. Real-world examples, such as vaping industry advertising and the rise of AI-generated content, illustrate these points.

You will also learn the concept of "disruptive information,” referring to verified falsehoods that challenge established scientific or expert knowledge, emphasizing that truth exists on a spectrum, not as a simple true/false binary. Critical thinking and fact-checking skills can help you manage “fake news,” misinformation and disinformation. 

Dr. Ahmed Al-Rawi is an Associate Professor of News, Social Media and Public Communication at the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. He is also the founder and director of The Disinformation Project, and his research interests are related to news, global communication, misinformation, and social media with emphasis on Canada and the Middle East.
